Week of March 17,2019

Dear Cunningham Family:

What teacher or teachers do you remember most? Who had the most influence on your life? What was it about them that made them memorable or influential?

My guess is that we all have had teachers that made a deep impression upon us. I invite you to engage in some time of reflective memory as we prepare for worship on Sunday. We plan to continue our discussion about our “Inward Lenten Journey” with a reminder that on our journey we need to listen to our teacher.

I hope you will continue to join us on this journey! It just might change your life!

See you in church.

Grace and peace,
Pastor Tom

Other Announcements

Kitchen Update: The Hospitality Group is working on organizing the new kitchen. If you see something that is needed or if something is needed for the old kitchen please communicate to Jennifer Wilkerson or to Chandra (CJ) at the office and we will help to make sure you have what is needed.

Love to Stay: This book by Adam Hamilton offers realistic, down to earth guidance for couples of all ages wishing to enhance their marriages. This class will continue for six weeks. We are meeting on Sunday afternoons at 5:00 pm in the Gathering Place. Please indicate on your Connection Card if you would like to participate. Books are available in the old fellowship hall.

Decor Donations: The Décor Committee reports that several items still are needed for the Gathering Place. Copies of the Committee’s brochure are available in the Narthex.

United Methodist Women: Come join us on Tuesday, March 19 at 9:45 am to hear Sue Liberman, speaking on “Growing Older Gracefully.” Sue is a Certified Senior Advisor and with Senior Solutions of Charlottesville. Come learn how we all can enjoy and/or prepare for this ‘season of our lives’ and have an opportunity for Q&A, fellowship and refreshments. RSVP to Charleene Frazier: 434- 589-8432 or crfscirn@embarqmail.com.

Contemplative Thursday Service: To everything, there is a season. (Ecclesiastes 3:1) in March we look forward to longer days, more sunshine and the hope of spring. As much as we love the season of spring, nothing we do will cause it to arrive any earlier. All things take place in God’s time. He has made everything beautiful in its time. (Eccl 3:11). Our task is to wait patiently, in contemplation of God’s presence in our world. We invite you to join us in deepening our awareness of God’s presence at our Contemplative Thursday Service. On the third Thursday of each month, a small group from Cunningham gathers together for the practice of spiritual disciplines, contemplative prayer, and fellowship. On Thursday please join us as we experience God’s love together.

Looking for Help: We still are trying to fill several positions including: Assistant Treasurer, Mission/Outreach Chair, and Newsletter Editor. These positions (among others) are described in the February edition of The Messenger (copies are available in the narthex). Is God calling you to serve your church in this role? Please speak with Pastor Tom or leave a note on your Connection Card.

Summer Camp at Westview on the James: Each year the Cunningham United Methodist Men, with support from the UMW and our Congregation, offer scholarships of up to $350 for each CUMC child who will be attending a Summer Camp at Westview. You can register your child for Camp at http://www.westviewonthejames.org/ (deadline is May 1 but register early to get your choice) and provide Walter Hussey a copy of your confirmation email so he can arrange for you to get a check for you to send to Westview. For questions, please email or call Walter at whthinker@yahoo.com or 703-967-1798.

Offerings During Our Lenten Gatherings: Our offerings during our joint services and Wednesday night suppers will be donated to the fund, started by a number of Fluvanna County High School students, to assist Bill and Jane Ford, whose home and personal belongings were recently destroyed in a fire.

CUMC Lenten Study: During the Season of Lent, our Monday Night Bible Study is taking an Inward Pilgrimage while on our journey to the cross. Pastor Tom will help us on this journey drawing from historic spiritual disciplines, adapted for use in our time. Everyone is welcome! Please join us for supper at 6:15 and for our Study at 7:00 pm. For more information, please contact Carol Frost (phone: 571-213-4286; email: cifrost@aol.com).

Our Lenten Journey in Community: We are joining with other Christians in our community in our journey to the cross during the season of Lent. In our community gatherings, we will be examining ways that Jesus invites us to put our faith into action.

Our Building Project Is In Transition: The Gathering Place is almost done. The remaining items include paving the driveway from the parking lot to the cemetery (weather dependent) and some minor work in the kitchen and a bathroom. We have received the Certificate of Occupancy from the county, so the Gathering Place is ready for full operation. We are now waiting for the final bills from AN Construction and others associated with constructing the building. We anticipate the final costs being within the agreed construction budget.
After these bills have been paid, we will be ready to convert from a construction loan to a permanent mortgage. We expect this conversion to take place in late March or April. At that time we will apply the remaining money in the Partners in Ministry building fund to minimize the amount borrowed. As we get closer to closing on the mortgage, we will notify you of the transition date and the financial specifics. Thank you for your faithfulness in bringing the Gathering Place to Cunningham!

Spending Time with the Bible: Center yourself for a moment, asking God to speak to you through the scriptures. Then read slowly. To give you a roadmap, we offer reading suggestions based upon the Daily Office contained in the Book of Common Prayer. You can also find these readings online at www.BibleGateway.com/reading-plans/bcp-daily-office/today. Don’t rush—it is more important that you take time to hear the voice of God than it is to finish all of the readings on any particular day. As you read, take note of words or phrases that draw your attention, and meditate on the meaning that those words or phrases hold for you. Here are the readings for this week:
